"Whatever you think of his [Santorum] politics, the fact is he has been outspent overwhelmingly and pounded to death by this ‘Restore Our Future’ Super PAC campaign of Romney’s which basically destroyed him. I think he’s eliminating him just as he eliminated Gingrich with his highly negative, highly funded campaign put together by the Super PACs. It’s not a healthy sign of our political future in this country. This is how we’re going to pick Presidential candidates. Through this elimination, extermination campaign where all you have to do is raise tons of money, unidentified by the supporters — unmarked bills basically — tons of money from wealthy people like Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers, and you can use that money to systematically destroy all your opponents until you’re the last man standing. Is that how democracy supposed to work? This sounds like a communist explanation of American Democracy. The worst case scenario is we run by destroying each other.

And unfortunately we’re now going to see the President engaging in the same kind of politics. It’s coming. It’s coming from both sides: the big powerful negative ad campaigns run by the Super PACs."

Law is not born of nature, near the springs frequented by the first shepherds; law is born from real battles, victories, massacres, conquests which have their dates and their heroes of horror. The law is born in torched villages, ravaged lands; it is born with the notorious innocents suffering in the throes of death as the sun rises.

But this does not mean that the law and the State are a kind of armistice in these wars, or the definitive sanction of victories. The law is not pacification, because under the law, war continues to rage within all the mechanisms of power even the most lawful. It is war that is the motor of institutions and of order: peace, right down to the smallest of its cogs, obscurely engages in war. In other words, we must decypher war in peace: war is the very cypher of peace.

Thus we are at war with each other; a battle front runs through our entire society, continuously and permanently, and it is this battle front which places each of us in one camp or another. There is no neutral subject. We are all inevitably someone’s adversary.
